Jacoby Loury, PhD

PROGRAM RESEARCHER & K12 CONSULTANT

He/Him

I often describe myself as a School Counselor Extraordinaire based on my vast experience as a licensed school counselor, educator, and supervisor. After graduating in May 2024 from Virginia Tech with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, I will be transitioning to SUNY Buffalo, where I will be serving as an Assistant Professor, training aspiring school counselors. My scholarship aims to explore creative, innovative, and developmentally appropriate approaches to counseling. As a self-identified gamer, I am most interested in investigating ways in which aspects of gaming culture can be incorporated into clinical practices.

At Seeking Wellness, my role is two-fold. I am happy to virtually consult with any parents/caretakers who are feeling stuck with their student's K-12 education. Whether this involves 1) developing a tailored program of study considering your students' postsecondary interests, strengths, and school offerings; 2) confronting academic challenges and introducing study skills; 3) school-based mental health advice or strategies; or 4) other, general school-related concerns. As a consultant, I am happy to demystify anxieties surrounding school for you and your student(s).

Additionally, I am excited to serve as the Project Director for therapeutic gaming at Seeking Wellness. My goal is to identify effective practices involving video game play that foster social/emotional development with youth. We have been awarded a grant to conduct research related to gaming culture in counseling settings.
